Person Centered Counselling

About Me

I have been a qualified counsellor for 13 years, working across the NHS, voluntary sector, and private practice. I truly believe that everyone can benefit from counselling at some point in their lives. Just as we take care of our physical health through diet and exercise, it’s equally important to nurture our mental and emotional well-being.

The power of therapeutic work is profound and can be deeply freeing — but it often requires a leap of faith. Whatever has brought you to consider counselling, simply sitting with a non-judgmental person can be a healing experience.

Most of us spend much of our lives avoiding difficult feelings, experiences, and patterns — often without even realising it. Counselling provides a space to explore why we are the way we are, deepen self-understanding, and create meaningful change. This process helps you feel less helpless and more in control of your life and choices.

I practice within a Person-Centred framework, believing that clients hold the answers within themselves and need the right conditions to enable change. Additionally, I draw on CBT techniques and Transactional Analysis theory when appropriate, supported by ongoing professional training.

Areas of interest/skills/experience

My Approach & Areas of Specialism

As a Person-Centred Counsellor I have a depth of experience supporting people through many of life’s most difficult challenges. Over the years, I've helped clients navigate trauma, loss, illness, relationship difficulties, and emotional distress.

My approach is grounded in empathy, honesty, and creating a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore whatever is going on for you. While I can work with a wide range of issues, my particular areas of interest include trauma, health and social anxiety, ADHD, bereavement, cancer diagnosis, anger, and relationship problems.

I have a particular passion for working with men who may find it difficult to come to therapy in the first place.  These are often the clients who experience the most noticeable changes — and relatively quickly. Talking to someone who truly listens, without judgment, can be an incredibly cathartic experience.  Therapy can feel daunting at first, but I often see how transformative it becomes — offering a space to make sense of emotions, understand yourself more deeply, and begin to live in a way that feels more authentic and manageable.

Many people begin therapy at a point where they feel they can’t continue living the way they are. From there, we begin the work of piecing together the “jigsaw” of their life — making sense of how different experiences, thoughts, and emotions are all connected.

Voluntary Sector

I have extensive experience working with survivors of domestic abuse, including three years in a counselling and advocacy role at a local domestic violence charity. During this time, I also completed specialist training through Women’s Aid.

Domestic abuse can deeply impact a person’s sense of self. It often leaves invisible wounds that can take years to fully understand and heal. Counselling offers a safe, supportive space to begin that rebuilding process — helping survivors reconnect with their identity, regain confidence, and move forward at their own pace.

NHS

I have worked within the NHS supporting individuals with a cancer diagnosis, as well as their family members. This work often involves helping people process the emotional impact of the diagnosis and begin to find a way forward.

A life-changing event such as a cancer diagnosis can often become a catalyst for deeper self-reflection. It invites us to look inward, reassess our priorities, and better understand ourselves. In truth, any significant life event — not just illness — can spark this kind of personal change.

I also have additional training in grief, loss, and bereavement, and offer compassionate support to those navigating these complex experiences.

Private Practice

In my work as a counsellor, I’ve supported clients through a wide range of presenting issues. What I often find is that while the initial concern brings someone to counselling, it's the self-discovery they gain that stays with them.

Counselling offers a space to explore what’s going on beneath the surface — to develop greater self-awareness and understanding. Often, people seek therapy when life feels overwhelming and everything seems tangled together. The process of talking things through helps to gently unpick those knots.

I’m continually struck by how little we’re often taught to know ourselves. So many of our reactions and interactions are automatic. But when clients begin to explore their inner world, the clarity and insight they gain can be incredibly powerful — and it’s a privilege to witness and support that journey.

What do I work with?

As a person-centred therapist, I am equipped to work with a wide range of presenting issues. Some common themes I encounter include anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, self-esteem concerns, work related problems, addiction, grief, loss and breavement, ADHD, communication problems, social anxiety, health anxiety, childood trauma and anger management.  My approach is tailored to each individual's needs, fostering a safe and supportive environment for personal growth and healing. Together, we will explore your unique experiences and work towards meaningful change.

Anger Management & Emotional Awareness

I often work with men who come to therapy seeking help with anger or looking for anger management. What many discover is that it’s not just the anger itself that needs attention — it’s what lies beneath it.

Together, we explore the triggers, underlying emotions, and thought patterns that fuel angry reactions. Through this process, clients begin to understand themselves more deeply, which often leads to improved communication with partners and others in their lives. As awareness grows, the intensity of the anger typically begins to ease.

This work isn’t a quick fix — it’s a process. But when clients are willing to engage with it, I frequently see meaningful change within 5 to 10 sessions.
